this
lobber prototype is a recent addition to that branch of my practice i
call action objects. these action objects developed directly through two
issues i encountered with digital sculpture practices. namely the thousands
of hours physically tied down to the computer, and more academically through
a concentration i followed regarding the materiality of 3-space geometry
as sculptural objects. resulting in a series of small objects called the
standard objects line (link coming). this series placed several disparate
materials side by side and included a computer assisted representation
of a digitally derived object exhibiting its 3-d requirements and joining
a long history of materials and processes.
it was a moot argument really, and one i had largely with myself, but
the objects of the standard object line afforded a reconsideration of
'real' form, asymmetry, and became the stylistic framework which combined
with my bio-physical reaction to far too many hours sitting in front of
the screen, spawning the action objects.
action objects where from the beginning very simple, such as action object
no.1, an 8in.diamiter 4.5 foot length of wood, just small enough to pick
up, but heavy enough to be a little dangerous. At once a log, and a perfect
primitive cylinder as in 3 space. i tossed this object above my head and
caught repeatedly until i was weakened to the point of dropping the thing
on my face. action object no.1 also illustrates the connection these objects
have, if even potentially, with performance.
action object no.1 was so simple and so open to various uses, it may well
have fostered this trend in latter work as well. (See - food) The object
has various ways of being used and so understood as different sculptures
or sculptural components.
another
example adds a soda can which has been sanded back to raw aluminum. This
is placed on the sidewalk and action object no.1 is held directly above,
vertically, straight out from my body working the muscles of my back and
arms and then dropped as straight as possible atop the standing can. The
action generates a beautiful though temporary painting on the sidewalk,
a radial spray pattern each of which would necessarily have a slightly or
radically varied and so a unique morphology not unlike a snowflake or thumb
print. And the flattened can is a sculptural object and or component for
latter sculptures, in and of itself thus action object no.1 is also a simple
machine for generating multiple unique design objects and one step in "processing"
aluminum components, if you will.
the action objects now include various systems for play and creative investigation.
But one more note on the early action objects.
this
lobber is the first generation towards a thrown or dropped object series,
resembling a generic maple tree seed pod--which i hope at some point can
be thrown straight ahead and achieve a balanced lift. this object series
is all about investigating lift and the potential contextual information
associated with human engineered flight, in this case the emergence of the
drone in military technological development. it also has a direct link to
earlier digital work.
